Death is Unconsciousness

When people die, they do not have souls that float to heaven and become angels.  The bible is clear, that the dead are unconscious in the grave, and the only thing that will regain their consciousness is the Resurrection, an event that will restore them to life.

Please note in the verses below that this unconsciousness is so complete, that the bible says they can’t even praise God, which is the whole purpose of man.

Psalms 6:5 For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks?

Psalms 30:8 …go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise thee? shall it declare thy truth?

Psalms 49:17-20 For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away…19 He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light. 20 Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beaststhat perish.

Psalms 88:10-12 ¶ Wilt thou shew wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise and praise thee? Selah. 11 Shall thy lovingkindness be declared in the grave? or thy faithfulness in destruction? 12 Shall thy wonders be known in the dark? and thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?

Psalms 115:17 The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence.

Psalms 146:4  His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.

Ecclesiastes 9:5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing…Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished…

Ecclesiastes 9:10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

Isaiah 26:14 They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish…

Isaiah 38:18 For the grave cannot praise thee, death can not celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth. 19 The living, the living, he shall praise thee, as I do this day…

2 Peter 2:17  These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever.
